Growing older presents challenges for millions of Americans, but members of the LGBTQ+ community are particularly hard-hit. According to the UCLA Williams Institute, LGBTQ+ older adults face many additional barriers to receiving health care. We created this guide to connect the elders of the LGBTQ+ community to the resources and information necessary to help them find the care that they need.
- Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders (SMYAL) Housing Program
According to the DHS youth census, 43% of Washington's homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. 330 homeless youth total were counted in this same census. Over the last year, SMYAL has provided shelter, food, case management services, crisis intervention, and community support for 13 LGBTQ youth ages 18-24. 85% of our youth are currently employed and/or attending school. Our Youth Housing program offers monthly life skills courses and community engagement opportunities including nutrition and cooking classes, financial literacy, healthy relationships, and communications, self-defense classes, and resume workshops. Entry into the program is a part of the District of Columbia coordinated entry for homeless persons.

In fact, according to the Human Rights Campaign, 92% of LGBT youth say they've heard negative messages about their sexuality. Another 42% say they live in a community intolerant of LGBTQ people. - Homeless Shelters (Anne Arundel County)
If you are homeless or in need of shelter please contact the Crisis Response Warmline at 410-768-5522. Anne Arundel County has four shelters for homeless families and adults.
Individuals and families seeking shelter assistance may follow the instructions below on how to be screened for shelter in the Anne Arundel County Coordinated Entry screening process. Each of these agencies will be able to add the individual or family to the wait list for Sarah’s House, Light House, and Winter Relief* in Glen Burnie and Annapolis. The county has one wait list for all shelters. If you have any questions you can contact the Emergency Shelter Gatekeeper at (410) 269-4749.
*Winter Relief is open between October and April each year.
