Lecture Series: LGBTQ+ History in Maryland: More than Friends: The Queer Chesapeake in the 18th, 19th, & 20th Centuries

Dr. Christopher Mielke will present “More than Friends: The Queer Chesapeake in the 18th, 19th, & 20th Centuries.” This will be a stationary version of his Three Centuries of Queer Annapolis walking tour, including stories of Revolutionary War generals, African-American schoolteachers, a quack doctor called the “monopolize of her own sex,” and many more. Christopher received his PhD from Central European University in 2017 and has worked on the history of subaltern people, such as researching the history of three enslaved women at the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis. He is currently an AmeriCorps member with the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area serving as the Head of Programming at the Bevelry Heritage Center in West Virginia.
