Has someone ever asked you to refer to them as they instead of he or she? Or, are you hedging because you can’t possibly refer to one single person as they? What if we told you that they has been used to refer to just one person since at least the 1300s?
Lexicographers have determined that as far back as the 1300s, they has been used as a gender-neutral pronoun, a word that was substituted in place of either he (a masculine singular pronoun) or she (a feminine singular pronoun), e.g., Each student should get their supplies ready for class.Each student is singular, but we don’t know (or need to know) the gender/sex identity of each student in this situation, so their is perfectly handy. Even Chaucer, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and other beloved writers of the English literary canon used singular they.

Starting May 7, 2019, by popular demand, the twice-monthly support meetings conducted by PFLAG Annapolis/Anne Arundel County will start one-half hour earlier–at 7:00 pm. Meetings still will end at 9:00 pm.
Chapter support meetings occur on the first and third Tuesdays of each month in Annapolis, Maryland. Check out the events calendar for details.
Support meetings are free and reservations are not necessary; however, donations are welcome.
An Evening in Annapolis

Join FreeState Justice for our annual lobbying day at the State House in Annapolis. Come speak directly with legislators to make sure we have their full support for equality, equity, and justice in Maryland. Then stick around for our Lobby Day Celebration at Reynold’s Tavern!

Our Chapter’s nonprofit status, plus support and benefits from PFLAG National, require a $15 USD annual contribution/donation per Chapter member. The National PFLAG organization provides training, publications, and other services to each chapter.
Your membership contribution/donation of $2+ per month/$25+ per year helps our Chapter to provide support to you and/or others in the Anne-Arundel County LGBTQ+ community in the form of the following programs:
* Support/Meetings
* Outreach and Community Participation
* Communications
* Education and Advocacy
Support is identical regardless of monetary contributions/donations and monetary contributions/donations are tax-deductible in accordance with United States federal law.
